A commoner turned diva, Dorothea's skill as a songstress can charm most anyone with a proper ear and taste for music. She's spent the last few years fighting as a general in a war (much to her chagrin) and is eager to think of the future — which includes finding a husband wife long-term plan for her financial security. But with so much time on her hands in a place like this, she's eager to make new acquaintances and allies who can share in some relaxation with her. She's open to new experiences as she's eager to please!
Chips and cards are the name of the game, and Dorothea is eager to learn. She'd like to be in a secure place to ensure her own safety and stability and she has some important people she'd like to keep safe. Which means she is plenty eager to please and open to learning if it means getting her needs met!
Dorothea's voice isn't the only sweet point about her: she's beautiful, charming, and witty. She's a conversationalist, eager to learn about you so she can make you comfortable. Excellent at acting, dancing, and all things music, she would make a perfect companion for someone artistic or musically inclined. She's a quick study, open and eager to learn and please, and she's lovely with pillow talk (if that's your thing). If you're the kind who enjoys simple and tender intimacies or someone who will dote on you, look no further!
Dorothea enjoys fruity and floral teas, books and plays on drama and romance, and likes flowers and gardening (so long as it's not too messy)! She would enjoy movies once someone introduces her. Any food is her preference...except for anything involving fish.
Dorothea will tell you she is quite fine with an interesting but kind partner who is decent to her — but we can do better than that! She would much prefer a partner who enjoys the arts, music, or theater. While she can appreciate someone with a strong or powerful physique, she is equally attracted to softer people. What's most important is that her partner is not cruel to her and someone who respects her boundaries.

[ —shit he needs to invest in better workout wear. he can't look like a slob in front of
the pretty girlher. ]uh
yeah!
i don't know which machines would be great for keeping up with the sword though...
no subject
Well, walking is still good.
I do a lot of that anyway around here but it can't hurt to do more...
I wonder if they have any wooden swords or something similar.
no subject
and the vale that's pretty much just a giant forest
but i wouldn't go alone...
[ sorry, dorothea, he's still got that old-fashioned view of girls needing an escort u_u especially in a place like this...! (nevermind he is the least able to defend himself of everyone here—) ]
i haven't seen any, but then again it's not like i was looking
if i find any the next time i'm in there, i'll let you know though
otherwise, it shouldn't be too hard to idk
make one? from a chair leg or something... or a branch ..

The gardens remind me of home but the Vale is beautiful when I've been able to go.
[ Which isn't as often as she'd like. She's still trying to map her own way around the resort and know all of its nooks and crannies. ]
That's not a bad idea, actually.
I bet there's a broom I can get someone to saw for me.
It wouldn't be quite the same but it's better than nothing.
Otherwise, I can see what's in the gym too.
[ She probably won't go overly often but it's better to remain in shape. For all she knows, she'll end up right back at home in a few weeks and be so out of shape... (Probably not. But one never knows!) ]

[Don't worry, he definitely has over one hundred additional questions, but he is aware (for now) that too many rapid fire questions may potentially scare her off.]

Magic is common in my home. Often, people have to practice and learn it more formally, and develop their Reason. Some people would say it's separated by a kind of 'white magic', which is Faith, and 'black magic' which is Reason. But there's nothing evil about black magic, necessarily! It's only different.
So I know some lightning-based spells, as well as a more powerful [ uh ] fire-stone related attack.
[ ...that is called Meteor. Oops. ]
no subject
Interesting. And this morality structure you say that some apply to the source of your magic. Are there only two perspectives on it? Or would you say that there are multiple?
[Again, restraining a litany of others, but he has a few priorities in this discussion.]
no subject
There is something called 'dark magic', which I've seen. It's quite terrible, but then, it's wielded mostly by terrible people. But I have a few companions who wielded it on their own and they aren't cruel.
[ ...Hubert might be the exception, sort of, but he's never been cruel to his allies outside of being a snippy bastard at times. ]
So I'd say there's some degree of multiple perspectives? But my experience is limited. I only learned magic for a year before a war broke out, so the rest has been more practical experience interspersed with my own study.
no subject
[Although not in precisely the same terms, he can certainly relate.]
Admittedly, I also found myself on the battlefield long before I truly understood the capabilities I had it in me to wield. And these capabilities, similar to your magic, carried a certain stigma. Though, I cannot say that it was purely academic.
Regardless of the source, however, I have known quite a few remarkable individuals who took up the burden and darkness of these powers in order to safeguard those most vulnerable to its destructive forces.
I have also known a man who directed them, not for simple destruction, but for his own selfish ends.
In the end, I wonder if morality can truly be assigned to such forces. If these powers are directed at the discretion or the whim of the wielder, does not the wielder's actions with that power determine the morality of its use? Rather than the other way around.

[ It's not but she's long since accepted that's simply how things shook out. It's a minor lament in the sea of other regrets, easier to let go than many of the others. ]
I can't say I know. I can think of a few people who would likely debate you to the moon and back about the subject. In the end, I think we can't always decide what magic responds to our call. We can decide, however, how we use it. The person I know who uses dark magic is someone I trust greatly. But I wouldn't trust my enemies to wield such a thing responsibly.
[ So it makes it difficult to know who to trust until it happens. ]
In the end, I suppose that means dark magic is a tool like any other magic, right?
☆ shanks
So when Shanks arrives, she looks up from the drink she's sipping and offers a smile and a little wave. ]
Hello. I'm guessing I'm meeting you? I...should've gotten your name before. Sorry on that.
[ She gestures to the seat at the bar next to her. ]
I'm Dorothea, though you knew that.
no subject
[ He offers Dorothea a return wave with his arm, while the left side of his cloak hides his missing one. He approaches with a warm smile, and takes a seat without wasting time. ]
You are correct. I'm afraid introductions slipped my mind, entirely. I'm Shanks, and clearly, it is an honest pleasure to meet you.
no subject
[ Her smile's warm enough, perhaps a shade embarrassed. She lifts her hand to get the bartender's attention when they have the time between the other guests. ]
I guess I just got caught up in the moment. [ She winks. ] But it's lovely to meet you all the same.
[ The bartender wanders over to take his drink order. Dorothea takes the distraction to sip at her own, and allows her gaze to briefly roam over her new companion with simple curiosity. It's only when the bartender departs that she speaks up again. ]
Have you been here at the resort very long? It's only been a few moons for me so I'm still trying to get my bearings.
no subject
[ His smile is warm as he answers Dorothea, and orders his drink. Just a whiskey for him, straight, on the rocks. ]
[ Shanks has to think for a moment. This question keeps coming up lately, but he hasn't really kept proper track. ]
Almost a couple of years. I imagine that helps me be more settled.
no subject
[ It's far too easy to fall into smaller, more obvious traps like that. It's why she chose this place to meet rather than to make things potentially even more awkward if anything else gets thrown in their ways.
Still, she pauses on her next sip, brow furrowing. ]
Years?
[ The longest she's heard is about sixteen months. Multiple years? Her expression flickers into brief horror. ]
That's... How? How do you even manage it?
no subject
The same way I manage most things. [ Shanks partially shrugs, his smile unwavering. ] Make the most out of this place. Meet a lot of good people. Have fun. Look for a way out, in the meantime.
[ And that's where the distractions come into play, too. ]
no subject
[ Well, what can she say to that? It's survival. At some point, you have to accept the chips as they are and make the most of them. She can't really disagree with him, no matter how disheartening it is to hear his experience. Dorothea chases the worry with alcohol so she can gather her thoughts. ]
You must be made of stern stuff to be able to weather this place for so long. I've been lucky enough not to be too troubled by anything here.
[ A carnival, a gala, and some outdoors time is nothing compared to the stories she's heard. She's very fortunate. ]
But years seems long enough to try anyone's patience and resiliency.
no subject
Good to hear you haven't been bothered by anything, too. Not sure that will last, but it helps to have friends, here.
[ He's not able to say much to the last part, but does nod his head. He prefers to keep himself under control. ]
no subject
[ She's really been quite lucky, not taking into account the dress incident. What few dangers have been tame and while the typical humiliations come and go, there's at least an understanding between others present that it's just how things are. Unfortunately.
Her brows lift a bit. ]
You're a pirate? And so far from the sea? I feel that's a little cruel of the resort to subject you to.
apologies - it's been a time
It is, a little. All I ask is they return me, at some point.
And what about yourself? Any special responsibilities back in your home?
all good!
[ Well, she's also been told that two people who succeeded in that have remained at the resort, and she doesn't know how she feels about that as an implication. ]
I was fighting in a war so this is...more amenable, I suppose. At least people aren't dying left and right or seeing their homes burned down. [ She could live without the coercion, though. ] Before that, I worked at an opera company, but I don't know the state of things since all of the fighting.
no subject
[ For a moment, he's a bit more solemn. War is always an ugly thing. ]
Perhaps this can be a bit of a vacation for you? [ A beat, and his interest seems to rise. ] What work did you do in the opera company? You don't sing, perchance?
no subject
It’s funny you should say that. A friend of mine from home said the same thing: that there’s really no use getting worked up and, besides, it’s better than a war. I can’t say he isn’t wrong, even if it’s troublesome.
[ Some vacation, right? But her eyes light up when he mentions singing, and even when she’s in the middle of another sip of her drink, she’s nodding. ]
I do. Sing, dance, perform… I can play a little bit of piano but not to the point of being exceedingly good.
[ Enough to read some sheet music and play the notes decently, but she’s no orchestra performer. ]
no subject
[ Shanks smiles wider as she speaks. He is enjoying the musicians of late. He can't sing, not even slightly. Don't ask him to, but he does enjoy listening to it. ]
Might you perform here? Of course, only if you feel like it.
no subject
[ It's the people, really, though she enjoyed the gala. The mystique of anonymity, the fun in seeking out new experiences. The resort may make her wary but there's enough to do and plenty of people to get to know. And so she's aware of the music room but not any kind of stage per se.
Her gaze lights up a little. ]
I didn't realize we'd be allowed to. Do you have to be a certain rank? [ Maybe she can earn some chips that way. ] I wouldn't mind. It's been a couple of years since I've done something formal like that, though I'm always open to more private performances.
[ And that's punctuated with a wink. ]
Do you think people would enjoy opera? I've gotten the impression that it might be too dull of a thing for people at the resort.
no subject
Honestly, I am not sure, either. You could do it anyway, and if anyone tries to stop you, I'll pull rank. [ He grins, pretty sure if one of the kings says they want to see a performance, the hotel staff will allow it. Might even help set up. ]
[ As for the opera, he remains grinning. ] I know of at least two individuals who will find appreciation in your vocals, as vocalists themselves.
no subject
[ It's better than how some of her friends have it, where they have to suffer in the lower quarters with barely a closet to sleep in. Regardless— ]
I'd like to meet your musically inclined friends, if it's all the same to you. But I'd also be happy to put on a performance anytime, whether it's on a stage or not. I have to keep up my form just in case I'm lucky enough to suddenly go home.
[ She settles her cheek in her hand, taking him in with newfound appreciation now. ]
What got you into music or stage performances? I didn't think that something popular for pirates.
no subject
[ He laughs to Dorothea's question. ]
Pirates love music. We sing, we dance. It's one way to have fun. There's even a popular song amongst us that most of us know and learn on the sea. [ Just don't ask Shanks to sing it.... Maybe Uta. ]
so sorry for the wait, I lost this!
[ Dorothea hasn't had the pleasure yet to meet with her, which is quite a shame. She sounds quite lovely. And the more singers, the better, frankly! No one can go wrong with that. ]
Are you certain you wouldn't want to be on stage? I imagine a carousing song would get quite a few people's spirits up in a place like this.
no worries, my slow time of year, anyway
It's best I leave the stage to the stars. [ That's the most diplomatic way he can think of saying he's not a good singer. But he can dance in the audience! ]
