But for all of the glitz and glamour of such a life, being so adored and famous had its cost: Dorothea still had to learn to defend herself from people who would try to harm her or worse. And for every suitor's proposal she received, she had to contend with the knowledge that the same people who spat on and kicked her as an orphaned child were the same who would offer her riches and pretty gifts now that she had blossomed into a star. Still, she endured, because her charm and looks would possibly snag her a rich husband who could see her secure long past the point that her beauty and voice would keep. After all, she didn't want to end up back on the streets in her old age, alone again.
When her idol (Manuela, who found her on the streets) departed the company in search of broadening her own skills, Dorothea decided to join her. Using her connections and charm, she secured the financial backing to go to the Officer's Academy; she studied hard and passed the exams on her own merit. If nothing else, the Academy would help her broaden her skills and see her finding deeper connections; it didn't hurt that the Academy was attended by mostly nobles, and she could still try her luck at finding a suitable husband (or wife) to take care of her.
Within the year, her House's leader - Edelgard von Hresvelg - declared war on the Church of Seiros. Dorothea followed her and their Professor into conflict, eventually becoming one of Edelgard's generals throughout the five year war.
It's not often that she shows it but Dorothea can also carry a kind of melancholy about her or a deep fatigue, especially when she looks on the realities of life that would weigh anyone down. Even when she tries to smile or show comfort, that heaviness seems to follow her.

Born in the Imperial capital of Enbarr, Dorothea was the daughter of a maid and a nobleman. When she didn't produce a Crest, the nobleman cast her and her mother out of the house to be penniless on the streets. When her mother took ill and died some time later, Dorothea was left alone to survive the streets of the capital. At the age of 10, she was heard singing by the premier diva of the Mittelfrank Opera Company, who was so enamored with her voice that she recruited Dorothea to the opera.
